Principles

Version 1 · Last updated: October 2026

https://grazing-pixels.at/en/principles

These principles apply to everything Grazing Pixels offers and will offer. What already applies today is marked, and you can check much of it for yourself on this site. Everything else is a commitment you can judge us by.

How to read this page: In place today applies now Commitment applies to our future offerings

Your data, your freedom

Your data belongs to you

We process your data only to provide the service you use with us and to protect our systems. We do not sell it, we do not analyse it for advertising and we do not pass it on, except to the service providers we name openly or where the law requires us to. Your data does not go into any other provider’s AI service; where we use AI, it runs on our own computers. It is stored in the EU or in the EFTA states – the GDPR applies in the EU and in Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway; the EU has found that Switzerland ensures an adequate level of data protection. We name every exception explicitly. And you can take all of your data with you at any time, in formats that other programs can read too.

In place today

This site sets no cookies and builds no profile of you. The server logs only what secure operation requires and deletes logs containing IP addresses after 14 days. Servers and backups are in the EU; Proton stores emails to us in Switzerland, Germany or Norway. Read more: Privacy policy

How to check

Check for cookies as described under “You pay with money, never with data”. Where emails to us go is shown by the domain’s MX records – for example with the command nslookup -type=mx grazing-pixels.at in a command prompt or terminal: they name Proton’s mail servers.

You pay with money, never with data

Grazing Pixels lives on licences, on subscriptions for services we run for you and on commissioned work, never on your data. On our sites and in our products there are no adverts, no tracking and no data trading, not even “anonymised” and not via partners. Our prices are calculated so that they cover operation, maintenance and support in the long term.

In place today

No advertising, no analytics tools, nothing from third-party servers: 0 cookies, 0 trackers.

How to check

Open your browser’s developer tools (usually F12, on a Mac ⌥⌘I; in Safari, first turn on “Show features for web developers” under Settings → Advanced). The panel is called “Storage” in Firefox and Safari and “Application” in Chrome and Edge: the “Cookies” list stays empty for grazing-pixels.at. “Local Storage” holds at most “gp-theme” – only if you have chosen a theme yourself using the switch. Reload the page with the “Network” panel open: every file comes from grazing-pixels.at.

You stay independent

You buy programs for your computer once and keep them. Updates are included for a fixed period that we state before you buy. After that, you decide whether to renew. The program keeps running either way, without an account with us and without a connection to our servers. There is a subscription only where we run something for you on an ongoing basis, such as a web application on our servers. It can be cancelled monthly; cancelling is as easy as signing up, and afterwards you still have 30 days to take all of your data with you.

Commitment

Applies to everything we will offer.

Our word

Promised without asterisks

What we promise applies exactly as written: storage location, service providers, encryption, support period. If there is an exception, it is stated right alongside, never in the small print. Before we publish anything, we check every statement to make sure it is completely true on that day.

In place today

That is how we checked this site and these principles. Where there is an exception, it is stated right alongside – for example for our server management. Read more: Open, even when it is uncomfortable

Open, even when it is uncomfortable

We publicly list every service provider that comes into contact with your data and keep the list up to date, each with its company name, registered office, place of processing and purpose. The same goes for the support period of every product and for our prices. If a service provider is added or we change one, we tell you before the change takes effect. We accept reports of security vulnerabilities through a dedicated reporting channel, and we inform you about security incidents promptly, openly and clearly.

In place today

The privacy policy names the service providers of this site, with company name, country and purpose. One gap we state openly: the provider of our server management names only “Europe” as the location of its platform and, for its own operations, transfers some data outside the European Economic Area. Our visitors' data never reaches this platform; it stays on our servers. Report security vulnerabilities to the address in our security.txt. Read more: Privacy policy · security.txt

Commitment

We will take over our server management ourselves before we offer our first product; from then on, we will also name the registered office and the exact place of processing for every service provider. We will publish support periods and prices as soon as there are products.

Good first, then released

A product is released only when it is secure, well thought out and pleasant to use, including for people who work with a keyboard, a screen reader or magnification. We would rather offer a few products and look after them for a long time. Whether we succeed is for you to judge: tell us where something does not work well.

In place today

This site can be used entirely with the keyboard, all content can also be read without JavaScript, and the “Reduce motion” setting is respected.

How to check

Reload the page and press the Tab key (⇥): “Skip to content” appears at the top left – it takes you past the header. Each further press moves to the next link or button, a frame shows where you are, and Enter activates it. In Safari, hold down the Option key (⌥) as you do this. Turn off JavaScript in your browser’s settings (Chrome and Edge: under site settings or site permissions; Safari: under “Security”; Firefox: only via about:config, entry javascript.enabled – turn it back on afterwards) and reload: all text remains readable, nothing moves by itself, only the switches for theme and motion are missing. “Reduce motion” is a setting on your device – on Windows: Accessibility → Visual effects → turn off Animation effects; on a Mac: Accessibility → Display → Reduce motion; on iPhone and iPad: Accessibility → Motion → Reduce motion; on Android, in the accessibility settings: “Remove animations”. The picture then stands still, and the cow on the home page only chews when you tap it.

Reliable for years

Before a product is released, we set and publish how long it will receive updates and security fixes. We do not discontinue anything quietly; we announce the end of support early. Programs for your computer keep running afterwards. For web applications, you will hear about it at least six months in advance and can take all of your data with you. We start a new product only if we can still look after the existing ones well.

Commitment

Applies to everything we will offer.

Our values

People before profit

Grazing Pixels is meant to be financially sound, not to make the largest possible profit. Our prices are public and the same for everyone. Where there are discounts, they follow open rules, for example for schools or clubs and associations. With us there is no artificial time pressure, no pre-ticked boxes and no hidden costs. We announce price increases in good time, and what you have bought remains valid. When you write to us, a human replies. And anyone who works for us will work under fair conditions.

In place today

Every reply from us is written by a human.

How to check

Write to us at office@grazing-pixels.at.

Commitment

Prices, discounts and fair working conditions apply as soon as they exist.

A quarter of the pasture belongs to everyone

A quarter of our profit goes to charitable causes. It is modelled on the commons: the land that everyone in a village used together, meadow and forest alike. The calculation is based on the profit that remains after fair pay for the work in the company. We support digital rights and data protection, education and digital inclusion, mountain forests, alpine pastures and nature conservation in the Alps, and social causes in Austria. Every year we disclose how much we have given and to whom.

In place today

There is no profit yet, and so no donation yet. Once that changes, every euro will be listed here.

Five questions you should ask any provider – including us

These questions help with any choice. Our answers are right next to them.

  1. Where is my data stored, including the backups?

In the EU or in the EFTA states (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland), with the backups encrypted. We name exceptions individually.

More on this: Your data belongs to you

  2. Who, apart from the provider, has access to my data?

Only the service providers we name publicly, and authorities only where the law requires us to.

More on this: Your data belongs to you Open, even when it is uncomfortable

  3. Can I switch at any time and take all of my data with me?

Yes. Subscriptions can be cancelled monthly; cancelling is as easy as signing up, and you get your data in formats that other programs can read too.

More on this: You stay independent

  4. What happens to the product and my data if the provider discontinues it?

Programs keep running. We announce the end of a web application at least six months in advance, and you can take all of your data with you.

More on this: Reliable for years

  5. What does the provider live on: my payment or my data?

    On your payment.

More on this: You pay with money, never with data
